Calendar Pick: Financial Planning Class

Financial Planning in ANY Market!
Date: Wed. 10-1
Location: Fairbanks Ranch Country Club
City: Rancho Santa Fe
Time: 6:30 PM
URL: http://com3.govtsystems.com/FriendsWithClass/?c=ClassRegistration/ClassDetailDisplay&ClassId=100278&CatalogId=&ProgramId=
Most of us can't help but get stressed out with the economic news these days, but let's all take a deep breath and gather for a seminar Wednesday, October 1st at 6:30 pm to review a disciplined, consistent and comprehensive approach to investing -- whether in a bear or bull market. We met LPL Financial Planner Alexandra Cabral Kinander at the Parent Connection luncheon and are excited to offer this timely seminar with a planner that speaks our language. Alex not only understands the questions weighing on us, but she is so resourceful! She got Old Mutual to sponsor the seminar, making it free to our friends, and then pulled some strings to have it hosted at the prestigious Fairbanks Ranch Country Club: 15150 San Dieguito Rd - Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067 (www.fairbanksranch.com) So whether you manage your own finances or need a fresh perspective this seminar can apply to all of us. Joining Alex is David Brenner, CLU, ChFC, who brings 20+ years of experience to the seminar. Alexandra Kinander and David Brenner are registered representatives with, and securities offered through, LPL Financial (Member FINRA/SIPC). RSVP by calling Gabriela at (858) 735-2922 or register below. See you there!

You Renewed: Week 3

Week 2 Recap
My favorite parts of the week - eating yummy oatmeal for breakfast each day...it kept me full until lunchtime. And, I loved the 10% of the time I got to indulge and not feel bad about it. Yum!

Week 3

EAT
Week 3 focuses on eating good vs bad fats...meaning monounsaturated and p0lyunsaturated fats vs. saturated and trans fats. Basically good fats lower bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol. According to the "You Renewed" booklet "They help to absorb vitamins and minerals;nourish the skin, hair, and nails; promote growth and development; promote nerve
function; help produce hormones; prevent diseases; regulate enzymes and much more." Wow! Lots of benefits. Some good fats include: olive oil, peanuts, almonds, salmon & other fish, and avocados. So, this week, instead of chips for a snack...I think I'll grab a handful of almonds. And, I am going to prepare at least one meal with salmon instead of red meat.

MOVE
This week's Move section focuses on muscle training. I've done aerobic exercise for years...running, aerobics, yoga, pilates, etc. But, I just started lifting weights, and I have so much to learn! If you need a reason to lift weights...check out this quote from the "You Renewed" booklet: Building lean muscle tissue (muscle mass) helps your body to burn more calories. Each extra pound of muscle helps to burn an extra 100 calories daily.

So, I'm sold! I have a set of 5 pound weights and a set of 10 pound weights. My goal this week is to get them out of their cozy spot in the closet and use them! In the past I've used them on and off...but I want to use them at least twice in the next week. If anyone has any tips for good weightlifting work out dvds or websites...please let us know!

THINK
The THINK section this week focuses on mindful eating...actually slowing down and enjoying each meal. As a mom of two young children my breakfast is usually eaten while holding the baby and rinsing out dishes, lunch is eaten in front of my computer while I hurry and answer emails before the kids wake up from their naps, and dinner is eaten in a hurry so I can get the kids off to bed. So, mindful eating is definitely something I need to work on. My goal this week is to eat lunch at my kitchen table instead of at my computer. I think I'll just stare out my window while I eat and enjoy the scenery...then its of and running again. But at least I'll enjoy a few precious quiet moments.

Don't forget to pick up your own copy of the "You Renewed" booklet at your local Henry's Farmers Market...it is fantastic, and was written by Henry's Nutritionist, Janet Little.

You Renewed: Week 2

Week 1 Recap - I LOVE stretching every morning...it is a great quick pick-me-up. I am definitely going to keep doing this and make it a habit! I'm going to continue looking for ways to include more veges in my diet...like adding broccoli to my lunch salad each day.

Now for Week 2!

EAT - Focus on Fiber
This week's focus is on fiber - fiber improves colon health, reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer, and helps lower bad cholesterol in the body. So...those are pretty good benefits. The You Renewed book says "If it comes from the ground, it has fiber in it." High fiber foods include beans, vegetables, fruit and whole grains. My goal this week is to eat more whole grains...and I've already started. My husband and I decided to eat oatmeal for breakfast every morning - it is helping us save a little money each week in our food budget and start our day right (try adding a little soymilk...its delicious!). And, tonight I made homemade rolls. Normally I make them with white flour...but tonight I used wheat...and they were just as yummy. Try to think about ways in your week that you can replace your regular food with something higher in fiber!

MOVE - Keeping your Heart Happy
This week's move section talks about keeping your heart happy, finding your target heart rate zone, and how to find your Body Mass Index. I work out regularly already, but I am going to make sure that my heartrate is in the zone that's right for me...so I am getting the best workout! Find your target heartrate zone.

THINK - When It's OK to Indulge
Everyone loves to indulge and the You Renewed book says it's OK...and even good for you! Just follow the 90/10 rule. Only indulge 10% of the time...use the rest of the 90% to eat healthy meals. So, if you eat 21 meals in 7 days...that's 2 indulgent meals. Yum!

San Diego Mama Favorite: Capri Blue Candle

My mother-in-law just bought me a Capri Blue Candle in the Volcano scent. It has been burning almost non-stop since I opened it. I LOVE it. The scent is described as "tropical fruits, sugared oranges, lemons, and limes, redolent with lightly exotic mountain greens." They also have an Aloha scent ( freshly picked orchids, jasmine and gardenia, entwined with white blossoms) or a Peeled Navel Orange scent...which is exactly what the name suggests.

You can buy them at Anthropologie...check out the new store in the UTC mall.

You Renewed: Week 1

This week begins my first week on the Henry's Farmers Markets "You Renewed" 6-week program. The program is divided into 3 sections each week: Eat, Move & Think. Here are a few tips from the program!

EAT
The Eat section for week 1 focuses on increasing antioxidants in your diet. I've heard a lot about how certain berries and even chocolate have high levels of antioxidants, but I'd never heard about the antioxidant benefits of many vegetables including arugula, broccoli, cabbage, radishes and turnips to name a few. If your family is anything like mine, these vegetables aren't going to be a welcome guest at the dinner table, even if they are going to help mama look younger. So, I am going to sneak some broccoli into teriyaki veggie bowls this week and make one of my favorite pasta dishes.

MOVE
The Move section for week 1 focuses on increasing flexibility. After reading the list of benefits, I really want to incorporate more stretching into my day. My goal this week is to stretch for 5 minutes when I roll out of bed each morning...hopefully it will "lengthen muscles and tendons to reduce the risk of injury" as I lug my infant's carseat around town.

THINK
This section focuses on successful goal setting. The tips to setting successful goals include writing down your goals (check...see my goals above) and enlisting help from others (that's you San Diego Mamas...check out our forum and get involved).

Want to learn more about each section? Stop by Henry's and pick up your own copy of the "You Renewed" booklet.

An Unexpected Blog Break...

I apologize for the unexpected blog break. I went on vacation and had a whole host of blog posts planned, but one thing led to another and...I ended up just relaxing, eating too many sweets, shopping, reading books and magazines and enjoying my family. It was lovely.

But, I'm back!

Check out my first "You Renewed" tip tomorrow.
